Dear Dr. Mimi:
I am quite sure that one of my best employees is pregnant. She hasn’t told me directly, but there have been hints and suggestions both from her and others. While I am ecstatic about this wonderful news, I’m curious about how I should handle this at work. It’s only been a few weeks, and she hasn’t come to talk to me about any accommodations or what her plan is once the baby arrives. We have a good relationship, and I want to give her whatever she needs; how do I start this conversation?
—Predicting Pregnancy
Dear Predicting:
If she is pregnant, you will know sooner rather than later. Be patient. Often, people are hesitant to let others know until they pass the three-month mark and/or they start to show. Once the information is common knowledge, the best way to start talking about this is to address the situation directly. Meet with her and ask what accommodations are needed due to the pregnancy. Convey that you care about your employees’ physical and
mental well-being as well as that of your organization. Go over due dates … both hers and whatever projects are going to come due. She will appreciate your compassion and will be more likely to share her plans as they develop.
